It’s 8pm, I have finally gotten my tricky toddler to sleep. The house is a full disaster.
The kitchen utensils are on the floor from where my toddler was playing, the sink is full of dishes, there are books all over the couch and floor in the living room, the recycle needs to be taken out.
Enter the turbo clean.
When my brain just can’t take it anymore, I have to frantically fix everything all at once.
Maybe you can relate in your business? When your email inbox is in the thousands, you have 10+ tabs open on your screen, you’re manually typing out yet another onboarding email in Dubsado and your ClickUp looks like a graveyard of tasks that are long overdue.
And you think, “something needs to be done and FAST!”
…but what? Where do you start? How do you fix it?
A Quick Fix to Getting Your Business Organized
First, I just want to say that it’s ok to have the behind the scenes of your business a little messy. That usually happens when you’re growing your business, deep in client work, focusing on others, not yourself.
Your current way of doing things has probably served you for a season, but you and I both know that you can’t operate like that forever.
And the advice to “just pick something to fix” doesn’t work. For ADHD business owners, hearing that is overwhelming because there’s too many choices and it’s all very if you give a mouse a cookie…
If you create email templates, you need to update your proposals.
If you fix your scheduling links, you need to update your calendar.
If you go through your inbox, you need to create an ongoing structure so you can keep it from getting out of hand again.
Suddenly you’re experiencing analysis paralysis, you’re stuck doing nothing and feeling shame that you just can’t get it together.
So here’s the REAL solution ⬇️
The Brain Dump
All roads to solving problems tend to start with a brain dump and this is no different. Gather all your business woes in one place.
Think through each aspect of your business:
– social media (do you need updated pinned posts? Update links?)
- Inquiry (does your form need updating? Your scheduling link?)
- Onboarding (email templates, organized way to collect client assets or info?)
- Offboarding (email templates, testimonial request)
- Website (link or page updates? Services updated?)
- Marketing (email workflows, lead magnets, blog links, etc. )
Prioritize
Once you’ve brain dumped literally everything, it’s time to prioritize the tasks!
Some of these tasks impact others, meaning you can’t do one until you do the other. Some of them are much quicker fixes than others and THAT is where I want you to start.
When working with ADHD business owners, I love to start with quick wins. Things like email templates, link updates, scheduling links are all examples of quick wins that feel productive and help you snowball into other tasks!
After getting yourself a quick win, I would suggest picking the thing that’s taking the most time away from things you want to be doing. For example, this could be updating things like email templates and proposal templates, which will likely have a big impact on your day to day operations in your business.
It’s also important to do the tasks that impact your business financially. For example, if you’ve been meaning to add a new service people to your website or raise your prices on your website, those tasks should get to the top of your list!
If prioritizing your brain dump is something that you struggle with, I created a free private podcast and in episodes 2 and 4, I dive deeper into prioritizing and staying on top of these kinds of admin tasks in your business.
Still Feeling Stuck?
If you’ve tried this process and are still feeling stuck, I want you to know nothing is wrong with you and it’s VERY common! Sometimes when it’s your own business and you’re too close to it, it’s hard to see what you should focus on or where to put your energy. At that point, you often don’t need more information, you need someone to help you sort through it with you.
And that someone can be me! In a Stop the Spiral call, we can audit your business together and give you a clear action plan for tidying up your business AND create a system for making sure you stay on top of those pesky organizational tasks in the future.
